We recognise the importance of identifying where customers may be facing challenging circumstances whilst undertaking our investigations. However, energy theft is dangerous and criminal activity.
If you suspect energy theft has occurred
Tampering with energy meters is extremely dangerous. If you are in a property, or have recently moved into a premises, where you believe that energy theft has occurred, please report this immediately by contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 023 2777.
Signs to look out for include:
- The meter reading not advancing when energy is being used.
- Additional wires or piping in and around the meter.
- If the meter is missing or has been swapped.
- If the meter is showing signs of damage, melting or has missing screws.
- A smell of burning, sparks of gas in the vicinity of the meter.
Do not go near a meter that you suspect has been tampered with.
We will investigate energy theft
We will investigate premises where we have reason to suspect that it is taking place. Energy theft is a crime. If you suspect someone is committing energy theft or has tampered with your meter, report it immediately by contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 023 2777.
