ENGIE’s Green Gas Plant Powers Thousands More Homes with Renewable Energy

More local homes and businesses across Exeter and East Devon are now benefiting from increased renewable gas, as Gorst Energy Plant maximises the capacity of existing equipment.

Following a recent agreement with the Local Planning Authority, ENGIE has made a strategic investment in the Gorst site to maximise the efficiency of its existing equipment. This upgrade will enable the plant to process a great volume, and a broader variety of feedstocks, significantly boosting its sustainable output without the need for new infrastructure. As a result, the plant now provides renewable electricity to 1,570 homes – and increase from 934, and renewable gas to 3,538 homes – from the previous 2,389 across Exeter and East Devon.

Gorst’s upgraded facilities, including the installation of a new dome on one of its key tanks, enables the plant to accommodate the additional feedstocks and enhance its green gas production. The plant’s annual electricity output has grown from 3,363,840 kW to 5,650,200 kW.

This investment follows ENGIE’s recent acquisition of Ixora Energy and rebrand, as part of the company’s ongoing efforts to expand its biomethane portfolio. With four operational sites and three more in the planning stages.

Stuart Rennie, Managing Director of ENGIE Renewable Gases UK, commented:
“This is a game-changer in our efforts to lead the energy transition and provide reliable, renewable energy to local communities. With the expanded capacity at Gorst Energy, we are directly contributing to the decarbonisation of Exeter and East Devon, supporting even more homes and businesses with green energy.”
