Biomethane

Biomethane is a renewable gas produced from organic waste through the breakdown of matter in a process called anaerobic digestion.

What is biomethane?

Biomethane is a renewable form of natural gas produced from organic waste materials, such as agricultural residues, food waste, and wastewater. Through a process known as anaerobic digestion, these organic materials are broken down by microorganisms in the absence of oxygen to produce biogas, which is then purified to create biomethane. This clean, renewable gas can be used in much the same way as conventional natural gas, including for heating, electricity generation, and as a vehicle fuel.

Biomethane plays a crucial role in the UK’s energy transition because it provides a sustainable, low-carbon alternative to fossil fuels. As the UK works to achieve its net-zero carbon emissions target by 2050, transitioning to renewable energy sources like biomethane helps reduce dependence on traditional natural gas, cuts greenhouse gas emissions, and increases energy security. Biomethane also contributes to circular economy principles, as it helps divert waste from landfill and turns it into a valuable energy resource.

What is anaerobic digestion?

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a natural, biological process that breaks down organic materials, such as food waste, agricultural residues, and sewage, in the absence of oxygen. This process occurs in specially designed vessels known as digesters, where microorganisms break down the organic waste to produce biogas – a mixture of methane, carbon dioxide, and other trace gases.

In the context of biomethane plants, anaerobic digestion plays a key role in the production of renewable energy. Once the biogas is produced, it is purified to remove impurities and upgraded to biomethane – a high-quality, renewable gas that can be injected into the national gas grid or used as a low-carbon fuel for transport, heating, and electricity generation.
