The Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS), a technology that has been in use since the 1980s, will be switched off on 30 June 2025. This service has been crucial for certain electricity meters, allowing them to switch between peak and off-peak rates, which helps manage heating and hot water systems efficiently.
Why is This Happening?
The RTS technology is reaching the end of its operational life and can no longer be adequately maintained. As a result, the decision has been made to phase out this service. This change is part of a broader effort to modernise the UK’s energy infrastructure and ensure more reliable and efficient energy management.
How this will impact customers with an RTS meter
If you have an RTS meter, it is important to understand how this change might affect you:
- Electricity Rates: Without RTS, your meter may not switch between peak and off-peak rates correctly, potentially leading to higher electricity bills.
- Heating and Hot Water: Your heating and hot water systems may stop functioning as normal if your meter is not upgraded.
- Limited Tariff Options: You may have fewer tariff options available if you continue using an RTS meter.
What you can do
ENGIE is contacting customers who will be affected by this change to discuss their options. However, if you believe you may be affected by this change, we recommend the following steps:
- Identify whether you have an RTS meter: If you are unsure if you do have an RTS meter, you can perform a visual check. Look for a separate switch box near your meter with a Radio Teleswitch label.
- Contact Your Supplier: If you are unsure if you have an RTS meter, contact your supplier. They will be able to confirm if you are affected, and discuss an upgrade.
- Apply for a Smart Meter: Smart meters are the best replacement for RTS meters. They provide accurate, real-time data on your energy usage and can help you manage your energy consumption more effectively.
Apply for a smart meter upgrade now.
Benefits of upgrading to a smart meter:
- Accurate Billing: Smart meters ensure you are billed accurately for the energy you use.
- No more estimates or manual readings: Smart meters send your consumption data automatically, which means bills based on actual readings, with no need to send in readings.
- Cost Savings: By optimising your energy usage, you can potentially reduce your energy bills.
- Environmental Impact: Improved energy efficiency contributes to reducing carbon emissions.
